KARACHI: Pakistan will build six civil nuclear power plants in the future in cooperation with China which would produce 40,000 megawatts of electricity till 2050, helping the crises-hit country to overcome its power shortage.

The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) had identified six areas where future civil nuclear power plants would be constructed.

This was announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday while addressing the ground-breaking ceremony of the coastal power project‚ K-II and K-III in Karachi which is the largest nuclear power project of the country.

The project will be completed within 72 months with China cooperation and will add 2200 megawatt of electricity in the national grid on completion.

Sharif said that it is his utmost priority that power shortage is reduced at the earliest so that development process could continue without any hindrance.

The Pakistani premier also expressed his gratitude to China for their help, particularly in power generation projects. He said that Pak-China friendship is time-tested and historic and it will further deepen with the joint ventures in different sectors.

The prime minister that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government is constructing Diamer Bhasha and Wasu Dams while Tarbela extension project which will be completed by 2017. He said the government also plans to construct Bunji Dam.

Sharif said that we have also initiated a coal-based power project‚ Pakistan Power Park‚ in Gadani‚ Baluchistan‚ that will add 6600 megawatts of electricity to national grid.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that our vision is to take our power generation capacity to forty thousand megawatt till 2050.
