The United States would deploy between 8,000 and 12,000 troops in Afghanistan with an aim to train and assist Afghan forces after NATO combat mission in the violence-ridden country ends in 2014, Germany’s Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on Friday, citing US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

“The American defense secretary announced that the United States will be in a magnitude of 8,000 to 12,000 troops involved in Afghanistan” after 2014, international media quoted the German minister as saying.
