Middle EastMorsi stands trial in Cairo; insists he is the legitimate president

CAIRO: Egyptian ousted President Mohamed Morsi insisted before a Cairo court on Monday that he is the legitimate president as he stood trial there on charges of inciting the killing of protesters in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.

“You have no right to try me because I am your president,” Morsi reportedly told the court where he was brought on Monday morning under tight security from the secret location of his four months detention.

Later, the court adjourned the trial of ousted President Morsi until January 8, 2014 after he refused to wear the white outfit mandatory for defendants and chanted anti-military slogans.

Morsi, who was overthrown by Egypt’s military on July 3, was due to appear in court along with 14 other senior Muslim Brotherhood figures on charges of inciting the killing of protesters in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.
