IndiaIndian controversial Kudankulam nuclear plant begins operating

CHENNAI: The controversial Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli, around 650 km from Chennai, the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has begun generating electricity on Tuesday, after its operation remained suspended for several years due to mass protests.

Those who oppose the plant‚ which is on the coastline hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami‚ have been expressing the fear that the plant may cause a disaster similar to the one at Fukushima in Japan in 2011.

However‚ the Indian Supreme Court ruled in May that the power station was safe and secure and it could start operations.

The plant is one of many that India hopes to build as part of its aim of generating 63,000 MW of nuclear power by 2032 – an almost 14-fold increase on current levels.
