ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Friday approved the amended anti-terrorism act that is aimed at to curb the menace of terrorism and give more powers to rangers particularly investigation powers to them.

The bill, which also provides ensuring protection of witnesses in terrorism cases, will be presented before the Parliament for its approval.

The cabinet meeting held with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the chair in Islamabad on Friday also decided to constitute a special committee to review the propose bill for local bodies act for federal capital‚ Islamabad.

According to the proposed amendment bill in anti-terrorism act it has been suggested that massive powers may be given to Rangers to deal with law and order situation.

Under the bill Rangers will have the powers to shoot target killers and extortionists on the spot. Similarly they will have also power to shoot down the culprits involved in kidnapping for ransom‚ playing with law and order and destructing national assets.

The proposed bill says that these massive powers are being suggested for Rangers to ensure protection of the people in Karachi.

The prime minister during the cabinet meeting directed to refer the proposed bill to the Minister Interior and Law to review the proposals before presenting to the Parliament. He also directed to make the proposed law according to the aspirations and interests of the people before presenting it in the Parliament.

Moreover, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi to bring peace there. He hoped that positive outcome will be produced from this operation.

The prime minister directed the federal government institutions to ensure full cooperation with the Sindh government to normalize situation in Karachi.

The prime minister also took strong notice of the absent of some federal ministers from the National Assembly and Senate and said that strict action will be taken against those ministers who will not present in the concerned House to respond questions.
