DHAKA: A Bangladeshi court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to Abdul Kader Mullah, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami party, for war crimes during the country’s 1971 independence war.

The 65-year-old Mullah had been sentenced to life in prison in February by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.

However, the senior Islamist leader denied all the charges and filed an appeal against the tribunal’s verdict in the country’s top court, which, on Tuesday, rejected his arguments and instead toughened the sentence.
