KARACHI: A powerful blast jolted the Karachi area of Lyari overnight killing at least eleven children and injuring 24 persons including Sindh MPA Javed Nagori, police sources said.

The blast took place during a football match in Lyari area of Sango Lane, where a number of people are reportedly wounded, police sources said.

The police sources said Sindh minister for Katchi Abadis Javed Nagori was a special guest at the ceremony and was the target of the blast. He was reportedly hurt in the blast.

Javed Nagori was reportedly leaving after the award distribution ceremony, when the remote-controlled device blew up, killing eleven children and injuring 24 people.

According to sources, the explosive material was rigged to a motorbike, lying mangled at the blast site.

PPP MPA Sindh Assembly from Lyari, Sania Naz Baloch confirmed that at least eight children, who were on the occasion to watch the award-distribution ceremony, were killed.

Bodies of the deceased and the injured were shifted to Civil Hospital and Lyari General Hospital.

The number of casualties was feared to increase.
