ISLAMABAD: Mamnoon Hussain, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate in the presidential election, said on Wednesday that he would resign from basic membership of his party if he was elected as President of Pakistan.

Hussain submitted his nomination papers in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday, after he was officially nominated by the PML-N as its nominee in the presidential election.

His party is holding consultations with all the other parties to elect him as the president, Hussain told media after submitting his nomination papers, adding that he doesn’t want to be a president like Asif Zardari or Ghulam Ishaq Khan.

He also said that every person should strive to remove the ills from the country and work with passion.

Hussain had earlier served as the 27th Governor of Sindh for a period of six months.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the presidential elections will be held on July 30. As per the schedule, the scrutiny process will take place on July 26. The candidates will have the option of withdrawal of nomination papers on July 27 and the final list of candidates will also be issued on the same day.

Senator Raza Rabbani of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) also submitted his nomination papers. Earlier, the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Balochistan National Party – Awami (BNP-A) declared their support for the nomination of the senior PPP leader.

The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) candidate Justice Wajihuddin also submitted his nomination papers in the Sindh High Court (SHC).

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has decided not to field a candidate in the election and is likely to be supporting another party’s candidate in the presidential polls.
