KashmirKashmiris observe Right to Self-Determination Day

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Kashmiris on both sides of Line of Control (LoC) and the world over are observing the Right to Self-Determination Day on Friday with the pledge to continue their struggle till achievement of their internationally acknowledged inalienable right.

It was on January 05, 1949 when the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution supporting the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves under a UN-supervised plebiscite.

Over seven decades have lapsed but no concrete steps have been taken by the UN to implement the resolutions of August 13, 1948 and January 05, 1949.

The situation in the Indian Occupied Kashmir has worsened since August 05, 2019 when the Narendra Modi-led fascist government revoked the Special Status of the territory.

Thousands of Kashmiris including the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Aasiya Andrabi and Nayeem Ahmed Khan are languishing in Indian jails.

In his message on the occasion of the Right to Self-Determination Day, the Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar Ul Haq Kakar said that the international community especially the United Nations bears the responsibility to ensure that the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

The prime minister regretted that despite more than seven and a half decades, the oppressed people of IIOJK have not been able to exercise this fundamental right. He said that India continues to oppress the people of Jammu and Kashmir to break their will.

Since August 05, 2019, India is engaged in a vicious exercise, aimed at altering the demographic structure and political landscape of IIOJK, with a view to turning Kashmiris into a disempowered community in their own land.

Anwaar Ul Haq Kakar said that the Indian Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the status of IIOJK is yet another step towards the denial of the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Kakar said that the genuine aspirations of the Kashmiris cannot be wished away through domestic legislation and engineered judicial verdicts.

Moreover, he reiterated that Pakistan will continue to extend its full political, diplomatic and moral support to the valiant Kashmiri people in their just struggle for their rights including the inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

In his message, the Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi said the people of Jammu and Kashmir await the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute as per the resolutions of the UN Security Council which should fulfill its commitments. How can Pakistan exert the right pressure for this cause internationally?

The minister said that India is trying to strengthen its grip on illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the recent decision of the Indian Supreme Court regarding the status of the disputed territory is the latest step in this direction.

How can India take such decisions when IIOJK has never been an “internal matter” for India?, he questioned.

The information minister further said that India is leaving no stone unturned to change the demography of IIOJK on the basis of religion. Is there any means to stop this illegal unlawful and unjustified step, one amongst many?, he asked.

Murtaza Solangi also asked that will the powers that be finally relent to the decades old demand for the right to self-determination, to decide for themselves what hey want to do with the land they call their own, or will IIOJK follow the Palestine route?

What legal or other options do the Kashmiris have to enforce the UN resolutions? Can the media play an important role?, he raised further questioned.

The minister also questioned that till what time can the legal movement of the Kashmiris be suppressed? What happens if and when it boils over? Is India moving towards an implosion, with this and other movements gaining momentum?
