The honorary Bano Qudsia was born on 28 November 1928. She also known as Bano Aapa was a Pakistani novelist, playwright, and spiritualist. She wrote novels, dramas, plays, and short stories in Urdu. The book Raja Gidh by Qudsia is her most well-known work. In both Urdu and Punjabi, Qudsia also created plays and television scripts. “A classic play” has been said about her play Aadhi Baat. On February 4th, 2017, Bano Qudsia passed away in Lahore.

Education

She graduated from Kinnaird College in Lahore and then joined the Government College University (Lahore) (GCU) to earn her master’s degree in Urdu literature which she completed in 1951.

Career

Bano’s career in writing started in 1947 with the encouragement of Ashfaq Ahmad during their college days. Migration from India to Pakistan had a profound impact on Bano to write for her country. She wrote about 27 novels, collections of stories, and several plays for TV and radio. Her primary reference in fiction is ‘Raja Gadh’ because a new style of literature was born in Pakistan.

Family

She belonged to a landlord family of Chaudhry Badr-ul-Zaman Chattha. Most of her family members were engaged in the occupation of farming and landlord. Badr-ul-zaman, her father had a bachelor’s degree in agriculture he died when Bano was at a tender age. Her mother, Zakira Begum was an educationalist who inspired Bano to become a writer. After the demise of her father, Zakira Begum took care of the higher education of her children. She had a brother named Pervaiz Chattah who was a painter.

Husband

Bano Qudsia was married to Ashfaq Ahmad, a fellow literature student from her college. The couple produced famous plays and novels that changed the course of literature. Athir, Aniq, and Anis Ahmad Khan were their three sons.

Services for TV

When television came to the country, she started writing for it. She has shown her skills on radio and TV for more than half a century. Her first drama serial on TV was ‘Sudhraan.’ Qudsia’s experience of writing in Punjabi dates back to the time of the radio. She wrote on the radio until 1965, then TV kept her very busy. Qudsia has written several TV serials and long dramas, including ‘Dhoop Jalli,’ ‘Khana Badosh,’ ‘Klu,’ and ‘Piya Nam Ka Diya.’ Her drama ‘Aadhi Baat’ got the status of a classic.

Death

At the age of 88, Bano Qudsia passed away on February 4, 2017, at the Ittefaq Hospital in Lahore. She passed away during the time of Maghrib prayers (after sunset), according to her son Aseer Ahmed. On February 5, she was laid to rest in Lahore, and prayer services were conducted in Model Town.
