Middle EastObama says US certain about Syria use of chemical weapons

BERLIN: The United States is certain that the Syrian troops have used chemical weapons in their fight against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday, Barack Obama said he has requested a UN investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Army against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants.

The United Nations has already announced that the militants have used chemical weapons, but it cannot verify that the Syrian government has used them.

Washington’s overriding goal is to see a “peaceful, non-sectarian and legitimate Syria,” Obama said, adding that the only solution will be a full transition excluding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
