ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has welcomed the deal signed between Russia and Ukraine, allowing Kyiv to resume exports of grain through the Black Sea.

In a tweet on Saturday, the prime minister said that Ukraine grain deal inked in Istanbul is a historic victory of diplomacy signifying that all crises can be averted through meaningful engagement.

The prime minister also congratulated the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on this remarkable achievement and thanked Turkiye for its key role in preventing the global food crisis.

On Friday, Russia and Ukraine signed a landmark deal to end the blockage of millions of tons of grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

The deal – brokered by the UN and Turkey – included a pledge by Russia not to attack cargo ships carrying grain, or the ports they set sail from while Ukraine in return agreed to allow the ships to be inspected, to check they’re not carrying weapons.
