Government of PakistanAzam Swati inaugurates Freight Train Service in Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan: The Minister for Railways Azam Khan Swati on Monday inaugurated the Freight Train Service in Karachi which will help ease the delivery of goods to other parts of the Country.

“In accordance with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan of uplifting business activity in Pakistan & to enhance freight revenue of Pakistan Railways, a Freight Train Service has been inaugurated that will transport containers from South Asia Pakistan Terminal to up Country destinations,” the railways minister wrote on Twitter.

The minister said that the South Asia Pakistan Terminal is established at the Keamari Groyne basin, adding that the Port is expected to handle 3.1 million containers/annum, this huge potential of cargo can be tapped to generate revenue of Rs 6 billion/annum for Pakistan Railways.

“Not only will proper rail connectivity expand the port hinterland but it will also drastically curtail the container traffic from the cities, ultimately reducing traffic congestions,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Freight Train Service in Karachi, the railways minister said that for the first time in history the railways will be made a for-profit entity and Pakistan Railways will be made a state of the art institution.

In his remarks, the Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi said that the development of Karachi will prosper the Country as well as the province of Sindh.

Ali Haider Zaidi lamented that the Sindh government is not doing any development work for the prosperity of the province including Karachi.
