ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: An important meeting of the Special Ministerial Committee formed by the Federal Cabinet was held at the Interior Ministry in Islamabad on Monday to take stock of the extradition treaty between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

The Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed presided over the meeting.

The Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen Mazari, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar, the Secretary Ministry of Law, the Additional Secretary Interior, and other Senior Officials attended the meeting.

It was noted in the meeting that the extradition treaty will be signed with the UK in the best public interest.

The Committee decided that further consultations will be held with the UK before taking the agreement to the Federal Cabinet.

Under the agreement, both Pakistan and the UK would repatriate each other’s convicted criminals to their respective Countries.

However, the agreement will only allow the repatriation of those citizens who have been sentenced by the courts of law.

The first round of the discussion about the extradition treaty was held in October 2019.
