ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Fawad Hussain has rejected the impression of any stalemate between the federal government and the opposition on the appointment of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

On Monday, two ECP members– Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi from Punjab and Irshad Qaiser from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – retired after completing their five-year term.

Rejecting the media reports about the stalemate between the government and opposition with regard to the appointment of new ECP members, the information minister tweeted, saying that Prime Minister Imran Khan will get the opinion of the Leader of the Opposition on the issue in accordance with the Constitution.

The information minister noted that a strong Election Commission, on which all political parties have confidence, is in the interest of Pakistan. He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has waged a struggle for a transparent system.

Chaudhary Fawad Hussain said that the government also wants to move forward with an open heart on electoral reforms and NAB laws. He said that we want consensus in the Parliament on all major issues.

The minister said that the stability of the political system lies in the respect for Constitution. He said that consensus on elections, accountability, and national security will give stability to the political system.
