St. Petersburg court sentences Tajik citizen for terrorist activities
St. Petersburg, Russia: St. Petersburg court has sentenced Tajikistan’s citizen Umar Makhmadiev who according to court is a suspected terrorist.
According to details provided by press secretary of City Court, a Tajik citizen suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg is sentenced till February 2018 by court on Sunday.
According to police, a drunken man who was identified as Umar Makhmadiev threatened to blow up the Mariinsky hospital in St. Petersburg with a hand grenade. He ran away from scene when security was alerted. However, he was arrested at the Pulkovo airport before his flight to Turkey.
The investigation suggests that further he intended to go to Afghanistan to join the ranks of the Islamic state – an organization banned in Russia. A criminal case was initiated against him under the article “Attempt to participate in a terrorist organization”. By a court decision, Umaru M. was chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention until February 7, 2018.
As a source in law enforcement agencies told Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Umar Makhmadiev wanted to reach Kabul Afghanistan to join Islamic State which is also known as Daesh.
“If the detainee could not realize his plans, he intended to commit a sabotage-terrorist act on behalf of the” Islamic state “on the territory of St. Petersburg,” the source said. The press service of the regional FSB of RIA Novosti confirmed this information.
