ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) on Tuesday organized a first “Children Lok Mela” at Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) in Sector I-9/1.

In collaboration with Training Wing of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) and Directorate General for Special Education (DGSE), Lok Virsa has been holding “Craft of the Month” program series which has seen participation of over 15,000 children in 16 programs.

Encouraged by this tremendous success, Lok Virsa launched a new series called “Craft is Knowledge” with the idea of `Harnessing Culture with Education’.

The purpose of the program is to promote traditional skills, encourage master artisans and to inculcate awareness among younger generation, especially children about the indigenous folk culture of Pakistan.

Crafts in focus will be the ones that were more popular among children during the last two years such as pottery making, truck art, embroidery, weaving, stone carving, doll making, mirror work and papier mache.

The program will also feature a one-day “Children Lok Mela” organized every month at the premises of FDE designated schools.

The first program of Craft is Knowledge series is called “Truck Art: Engagement with Artisans”.

Master artisans in the specialized craft field of truck art will be invited to demonstrate their skills on the occasion and provide hands-on training to children (age group: 7-16 years) in a meaningful and interactive manner during the five day program.
