PoliticsECP issues show cause notice to Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday rejected objections raised by the Chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, and issued a show cause notice to him in Contempt of Court Case.

The five-member Election Commission headed by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza resumed hearing of the Case in Islamabad.

The Election Commission rejected Imran Khan’s objections, and ruled that it is within the ECP’s jurisdiction to take action on contempt of court.

The ECP sought reply from the PTI Chief Imran Khan by August 23.

Earlier, the PTI Chief had challenged the Election Commission’s authority to hear the Contempt of Court Case.

The ECP had issued a contempt notice to Imran Khan in January 2017 over his contentious remarks in a review application filed before the Election Commission.

During the hearing of the contempt petition filed by a former founding member of the PTI Akbar S. Babar, the Election Commission took exception to the remarks made by Imran Khan alleging ‘bias’ in favour of the petitioner for ‘extraneous reasons including political.’

Imran Khan had filed the review application against the ECP’s order to produce the PTI’s financial documents before the Election Commission.
