ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) on Saturday marked the World Earth Day, with a pledge to further intensify its research-based activities to save the planet from environmental hazards.
The University has organized various events in the recent years to engage students and its faculty members in the tree-plantation, according to a press release.
In order to create awareness among the students and the general public, the University’s Department of Home and Health Sciences had recently organized a seminar, in collaboration with other local organizations.
In his message on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shahid Siddiqui assured that AIOU being Mega University with about 1.3 million students will be a helping hand in providing academic support to the government and the World body to make the earth pollution-free and well-preserved for the coming generation.
He said that the university has been actively engaged in doing research on socio-economic issues relating to the society. Various academic programs have been initiated to deal with issues relating to environmental problems and global warming as well.
The theme of Earth Day 2017’s campaign is Environmental and Climate Literacy.
Dr. Shahid Siddiqui further said education is the foundation for progress.
“We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet”, he added.
“We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection, he added.
