KARACHI, Pakistan: A senior official at the Afghan Consulate General in Karachi was shot dead on Monday, police said.

The incident took place in Old Clifton area of Karachi where a quarrel erupted between the third Secretary at the Afghan Consulate Muhammad Zaki Abdu and an Afghan security guard Hayatullah over a personnel issue.

Resultantly, the Afghan security guard shot Muhammad Zaki to death.

Meanwhile, police took the Afghan security guard into custody and also seized his weapon.

Talking to the media, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Azad Khan confirmed the arrest of Afghan security guard Hayatullah. He said that initially it looked that the incident might have taken place as a result of personal enmity. He said that it did not appear to be an act of terrorism.

Later in a statement, the Foreign Office said that the Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry talked on phone with the Afghan Ambassador Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal to express our condolences to the Afghan government over this incident and assured full assistance in conducting the necessary investigations in the matter.
