ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Minister of State for Interior and Narcotics Control Balighur Rehman told the Senate on Tuesday said that the government had launched a country-wide campaign against the human trafficking and arrested 2,184 travel agents in that regard.

Replying to a question in the Upper House, he appreciated the role of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the government’s anti-trafficking campaign was appreciable.

The agency, which was working under legal authority and independently, he said, had arrested many agents throughout the country. Keeping in view its performance, the government had increased its role till Torkham Border to control human trafficking, he added.

Answering another question, he said till today (December 20), the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) had detected total 58,000 people having fake Pakistani nationality.

Some 54 NADRA employees, who were involved in issuing of identity cards to foreigners, had been arrested and 16 of them had been dismissed, he added.

He said about 2,244 foreigners, including Afghans, Bengalis and Indians, having fake ID cards of Pakistan presented themselves in front of the authorities concerned and they were given special immunity.

Senators from Balochistan demanded establishing NADRA’s registration offices in far flung areas of the province.

To another query, the minster told the House that the project of renovation of water filter plants in the capital city had been awarded to contractors. Total 37 filter plants were working in Islamabad, he added.

Baligh said the quality of water of the filter plants was being checked by the Water Quality Control Cell, Engineering Laboratory CDA and Pakistan Council for Research of Water Resources.
