FAISALABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan was ranked at 8th position in wheat producing countries but now it has attained 6th position among top wheat producers.

This was stated by Dr Abid Mehmood, Director General, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, while addressing the annual wheat research seminar, here on Tuesday.

He said that Pakistan is producing 25 million tonnes of wheat annually whereas Punjab is contributed its share of 19 million tonnes wheat to total production.

He said that Pakistan has witnessed 1.6 percent increase in wheat production during 2015-16 which will alternatively save 16 million rupees of the national kitty.

He said that Pakistan is self-sufficient country in wheat production as wheat is sown over 20 to 25 million acres in the country every year.

Director Wheat Research Department AARI Dr Makhdoom Hussain also addressed the function and briefed the participants about research activities and achievements of his institution.
