MULTAN, Pakistan: A passenger train collided with a goods train near Multan on Thursday morning, resulting in deaths of at least four persons and injuries to more than 120.

Rescue officials said that the collision took place between Karachi-bound Awam Express and a freight train near Buch Railway Station in Sher Shah.

Talking to media, the Multan District Coordination Officer (DCO) Nadir Chattha said that the incident took place when a freight train overran a man some 25 kilometers away from Multan and in the meantime Awam Express, coming from Peshawar using the same rail line, collided with the carriages of the train.

The DCO Multan said that as a result of the collision, four bogies of Awam Express overturned while the engine and the power van were also left completely wrecked.

The injured were rushed to Multan’s Nishtar Medical Hospital and Shahbaz Sharif Hospital. Medical Superintendent (MS) Nishtar Hospital Dr Ashiq Malik appealed for blood donations as several people were in serious condition.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways also ordered an investigation into the mishap, directing all of the concerned officials reach the accident spot.

PM aggrieved over loss of lives in train accident

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in train accident in Multan.

“The Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and grant of courage and forbearance to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss,” a statement from the PM House said.

The Prime Minister prayed for swift recovery of the injured and directed best medical treatment for them.
