ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan Wednesday postponed the elections of Mayors/Deputy Mayors and Chairmen/Vice Chairmen in the province of Sindh till appointment of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The CEC also postponed by-election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the incomplete composition of Commission, according to the ECP spokesman.

The spokesman said that all the four members of the ECP have completed their tenure on June 12. The Constitution of the Election Commission as per Article 218(2)(B) of the Constitution is in process by the government.

The ECP spokesman said that according to Article 218 (3) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan “It shall be the duty of the Election Commission to organize and conduct the election and to make such arrangements as are necessary to ensure that the election is conducted honestly, justly, fairly and in accordance with law, and that corrupt practices are guarded against”.

Fresh schedule to hold elections will be issued after the appointment of members of the Commission, he added.
