PoliticsToR Committee: Opposition appears disappointed over government’s attitude

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Parliamentary Committee formed to frame Terms of Reference (ToRs) for proposed Judicial Commission to probe Panama allegations held its 7th meeting in Islamabad on Friday; however, the deadlock continued to persist while the opposition representative expressed their disappointment over government’s attitude.

Sources said that deadlock remained in the committee meeting, and both Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Aitzaz Ahsan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Shah Mehmood appeared disappointed after today’s sitting.

The PTI leader advised the opposition parties to better quit the committee due to government’s attitude.

Earlier, the parliamentary committee discussed salient features of the ToRs and draft of a bill titled “Commission of Inquiry Act-2016.”

Senators Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Aitzaz Ahsan, Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo and Ilyas Ahmad Bilour; and Members of the National Assembly Zahid Hamid, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Akram Khan Durrani, Anusha Rehman Khan Advocate, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sahibzada Tariq Ullah and Chaudhry Tariq Bashir Cheema attended the meeting.

The differences remained intact between the two sides on ToRs, though they decided to continue further discussions thereon during next meeting.

During the meeting, the government side circulated copies of two documents titled “Comparison of Original ToRs of the Joint Opposition and the ToRs presented on 7.6.2016” and “Comparison of Original ToRs of the Joint Opposition and ToRs dated 7.6.2016.”

The government side also circulated among the members copies of a bill titled “Commission of Inquiry Act, 2016,” drafted by it.

The parliamentary body would meet again on June 14 at 03:00 pm.
