CHARSADDA, Pakistan: A group of militants attacked the Bacha Khan University located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda town on Wednesday morning, causing two huge blasts and gun fire as security forces rushed to the building and retaliated.

The police officials said that four militants were involved in attack and in order to foil their nefarious designs, further police reinforcements had reached the University from various areas of the City.

Casualties

They said that Professor of Chemistry Department Dr Hamid was killed while multiple injuries which also included of two security guards happened as a result of firing by militants.

The injured persons were being shifted to District Health Quarter (DHQ) Hospital Charsadda for medical treatment. According to hospital administration, 50 injured mostly students had been brought for treatment.

3000 students, 600 guests present in University

The University Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Fazal Raheem told media that more than 3000 students were present in the University when attack occurred. He said that 600 guests had also arrived in the University to attend a ‘Mushaira’ in connection with the 28th death anniversary of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, more commonly known as Bacha Khan.

Army initiates operation against attackers

Meanwhile, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a contingent of Pakistan army also reached the University to control the situation. The DG ISPR said that the operation had been initiated against militants under aerial surveillance.

The reports said that a heavy firing still continue between the security forces and militants.

6 to 8 militants attacked University: KPK Secretary Interior

The Secretary Interior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muneer Azam said that 6 to 8 militants attacked the Bacha Khan University. He said that a medical emergency had been imposed in Charsadda and Murdan hospitals.

Two attackers killed: DIG Saeed Wazir

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Saeed Wazir said that two attackers had been killed in retaliatory firing by security forces.

The sources present in the area are of the view that militants took advantage of the Mushaira which was scheduled in Bacha Khan University today, as attackers might have entered the University building under the garb of guests.
