BAGHDAD: At least 14 persons including a woman and a child were killed when the militants from the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fired rockets near the shrines of Shia Imams in the Iraqi city of Samarra, the Iranian media reported on Thursday.

Samarra is located nearly 120 kilometers (74 miles) north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, and is home to the holy shrines of two Shia Imams and a major pilgrimage site.

The holy sites in the city came under similar attacks by Al-Qaeda militants in 2006.
