Over 100 dead in overnight flooding in northern Afghanistan

PUL-I-KHUMRI, Afghanistan: Flash floods and torrential rains killed around 150 persons and forced hundreds of others to flee their houses in Guzargah-e-Noor district of Afghanistan’s northern Baghlan province on Friday night.

The local officials in Baghlan province said that hundreds of homes were also destroyed as a result of the flooding.

The reports coming from Baghlan province stated that torrential rains started on the evening of Friday and continued the whole night resulting in massive floods.

The Deputy Governor Abdul Qadir Niazi informed local press that an emergency meeting had been held to send a team of local authorities to effected areas to assess the losses and help the vulnerable.

Nisazi said that dead bodies of 20 persons including women and children were seen floating but administration had no facility to recover dead bodies from the waters. He himself along with other locals sought refuge at a hillside.

Guzargah-i-Noor is located 120 kilometres from the provincial capital, bordering with the neighboring Takhar province.
