ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Senate polls will be held on March 3 during which 52 lawmakers will be elected for the 104-member upper house, according to the schedule issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday.
The ECP says that nomination papers from the candidates will be received on February 12 and 13 while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on February 16 and 17.
The final list of candidates will be issued on February 25, according to the schedule for Senate elections.
The polls will be held on March 3 as 52 Senators will retire on March 11 in the upper house of the bicameral Parliament.
Those 52 Senators who are retiring on March 11 include 21 lawmakers from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), eight from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), six from Awami National Party (ANP), three each from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), two from Balochistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A) and one each from Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Pakhtun-khwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and National Party (NP).
The Senate elections are held every three years for one half of the Senate and each Senator has a term of six years.
The senators are elected by the members of the provincial legislatures and the composition of the existing assemblies.
