ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The number of deaths continue to increase as the death toll has soared to 272 after a massive earthquake wracked havoc across the country particularly in northern areas.

A total of 272 people have been confirmed dead while 1,909 have suffered injuries as a result of October 26 earthquake, according to latest updates issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued on Thursday.

Likewise, 13,771 houses across the country got damaged in the natural calamity.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has come out as the worst affected by the earthquake with 226 deaths, 1,706 injuries and 12,968 damaged houses.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shangla, Swat and Chitral are the most affected districts with 60, 37 and 32 deaths respectively.

The Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) is the second worst affected region wherein 30 deaths and 59 injuries occurred.

As many as 10 people lost their lives while 31 were admitted to hospitals in Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The country’s largest province as far as population is concerned, Punjab witnessed five deaths and 98 injuries whereas two people died in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, rescue and relief activities are going on in earthquake affected areas.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has already announced a relief package for the rehabilitation of quake affected people under which, Rs300,000 be given to the family of each deceased and Rs100,000 to each injured person.

Similarly, Rs200,000 will be given to the one who lost his limb or any other body part in the calamity.

Under the package, Rs200,000 would also be given for the construction of completely damaged houses while Rs100,000 each for the partially damaged houses.
